It is one of the largest pigeons in the Caribbean, measuring up to 40 centimeters in length.
The 'scaly' appearance is created by chestnut-bordered feathers on the hindneck that shimmer with purple and green iridescence.
The species possesses a distinct bare orbital ring that is typically reddish-purple in adults.
