Field notes

The distinctive blue-grey orbital skin is a broad, unfeathered patch that creates a striking 'spectacled' appearance.
A prominent white line along the wing edge is visible when perched, which transforms into large, bright white patches during flight.
It is a specialist of xeric environments, frequently seen foraging on the fruits and seeds of organ pipe and prickly pear cacti.
During courtship, males perform a steep upward flight followed by a circular glide with wings held in a rigid V-shape.
Unlike many pigeons, it has successfully adapted to urban environments within its range, often nesting in garden trees and ornamental palms.
