The Dusky Pigeon is a small, dark New World pigeon endemic to the humid forests of the Chocó bioregion. It is often recognized by its uniform leaden-gray plumage and subtle vinous wash on the head and breast.

Field notes

It was historically considered a subspecies of the Plumbeous Pigeon (Patagioenas plumbea) but is smaller and darker.
The species is largely arboreal, foraging for small fruits and berries almost exclusively in the forest canopy.
Adults possess a distinctive reddish-pink iris and a dark bill, which help distinguish them from similar sympatric species.
Unlike many other pigeons, it is rarely seen on the ground and prefers dense, primary forest over disturbed habitats.
It typically measures around 24 centimeters in length, making it one of the smaller members of the genus Patagioenas.

Habitat

Canopy and sub-canopy of humid lowland and foothill forests, primarily in primary growth.

Range

Chocó region of western Colombia and western Ecuador.
