The Eurasian Eagle-Owl is one of the world's largest and most formidable owls, distinguished by its massive size, prominent ear tufts, and striking orange eyes.

What it sounds like

A deep, booming, two-syllable 'ooh-hu' with the first syllable higher in pitch and more emphasized.

Field notes

It has a wingspan reaching up to 188 cm (6 ft 2 in), making it one of the largest owl species globally.
As an apex predator, it can hunt prey as large as roe deer fawns, foxes, and other raptors like buzzards.
The species is highly territorial and uses its deep, resonant call to defend territories that can span up to 80 square kilometers.
They are primarily cliff-nesters, choosing ledges or crevices, but will occasionally use abandoned nests of other large birds or ground scrapes.
Despite their size, they are incredibly silent in flight due to specialized comb-like fringes on their primary feathers that suppress noise.

Habitat

Cliffs, rocky outcrops, mountain ranges, open woodlands, and occasionally large coniferous forests.

Range

Widespread across much of Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa.
