Field notes

It is the smallest bird species endemic to Mexico, with adults weighing only 2 to 2.7 grams.
The species exhibits a unique flight style characterized by slower wingbeats than most hummingbirds, closely mimicking the movement of a large bee.
Adult males possess a brilliant iridescent magenta-pink gorget with elongated feathers that can be flared during courtship displays.
Unlike many relatives, it frequently forages low to the ground in the forest understory rather than the canopy.
Taxonomically, it was recently reclassified from the genus Atthis to Selasphorus based on molecular phylogenetic evidence.

Habitat

Humid montane forests, pine-oak woodlands, and shrubby forest clearings.
