A medium-sized, migratory grey goose distinguished by its dark head, short pink-banded bill, and bubblegum-pink legs. It is a hardy Arctic specialist known for forming massive, noisy wintering flocks.

What it sounds like

A high-pitched, musical, and somewhat sharp 'wink-wink' or 'gag-gag' that is more soprano than the Greylag Goose.

Field notes

The species is unique among geese for its preference for nesting on high, inaccessible cliff ledges to avoid predation by Arctic foxes.
During autumn migration, they are famous for 'whiffling,' a zig-zagging aerial maneuver where they flip their bodies upside down to drop altitude rapidly.
The United Kingdom hosts the vast majority of the global population during the winter, particularly birds from the Icelandic and Greenlandic breeding grounds.
Unlike the similar Bean Goose, the Pink-footed Goose has a noticeably shorter neck and a more compact, rounded head shape.
They are highly gregarious and can form wintering aggregations exceeding 40,000 individuals in a single location.
