Field notes

Their plumage features intricate black scaling that provides excellent camouflage against the dark volcanic rocks of their maritime habitat.
They are highly salt-tolerant, frequently foraging for mollusks, crustaceans, and seaweed in intertidal zones.
The vast majority of the global population nests within the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in western Alaska.
Unlike many geese that graze in inland fields, this species is almost exclusively tied to coastal salt marshes and beaches.
They are relatively non-migratory compared to other Arctic geese, with many wintering as far north as the ice-free Aleutian Islands.
