Field notes

Exhibits extreme plumage polymorphism, ranging from dark chocolate brown to pale-bellied morphs.
Breeds almost exclusively on the remote volcanic Trindade and Martin Vaz islands off the Brazilian coast.
Engages in high-speed, dynamic soaring and dramatic aerial courtship displays involving steep vertical dives.
Was historically considered conspecific with the Pacific-dwelling Herald Petrel (Pterodroma heraldica).
Unlike many petrels, they are frequently active around their nesting cliffs during the day to utilize thermal updrafts.

Habitat

Pelagic open ocean and steep, rocky volcanic island slopes or cliffs.

Range
