Field notes

It is a dietary specialist, relying heavily on the seeds of the endangered Paraná pine (Araucaria angustifolia) during the breeding season.
The species exhibits altitudinal migration, moving from high-elevation nesting sites to lowland areas in response to food availability.
Populations are highly gregarious outside the breeding season, forming communal roosts that can number in the thousands.
Unlike many Amazon parrots, it shows subtle sexual dimorphism where males typically possess more extensive red on the primary coverts.
It is currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to historic habitat loss and the ongoing threat of the illegal pet trade.

Habitat

Araucaria moist forests, Atlantic forest gallery woodlands, and open savannahs.

Range

Primarily southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul), with small populations in northeastern Argentina and Paraguay.
