Field notes

It is the national bird of Dominica and is prominently depicted on the center of the country's national flag.
Reaching lengths of up to 48 centimeters (19 inches), it is the largest member of its genus.
The species was pushed toward the brink of extinction following the devastating impact of Hurricane Maria in 2017.
It possesses a distinctive deep purple plumage on its breast and neck, which provides effective camouflage in the shaded canopy.
Imperial Amazons are notoriously shy and typically remain silent to avoid detection when humans are nearby.
