Field notes

It possesses a specialized brush-tipped tongue with elongated papillae designed to efficiently harvest nectar and pollen.
While primarily bright red, it features distinct blue undertail coverts and blackish flight feathers with red markings.
They are highly arboreal and rarely descend to the ground, preferring the canopy for both foraging and nesting.
Juveniles are identified by their dark brownish-black beaks, which transition to a bright orange-red as they reach maturity.
It is a highly gregarious species, frequently observed traveling in large, noisy flocks to communal roosting sites.
