Field notes

It is the smallest member of the genus Eos, reaching a length of only about 24 centimeters.
The species is highly specialized for nectarivory, possessing a brush-tipped tongue to lap up nectar and pollen.
Unlike many lowland lories, this species is restricted to high-altitude cloud forests above 1,200 meters.
It is endemic to a single island, found nowhere else in the world but the mountains of Seram, Indonesia.
Its plumage is almost entirely red, save for the blue ear coverts and purple-black highlights on the wings and tail.
