Field notes

Formerly classified as a subspecies of the Rainbow Lorikeet, it is now recognized as a distinct species within the Trichoglossus genus.
The species is characterized by dense, dark purple-black transverse barring across its red breast, a trait more pronounced than in its relatives.
It is currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to a small range and pressure from the illegal cage bird trade.
Equipped with a specialized brush-tipped tongue, it primarily feeds on nectar, pollen, and native fruits.
Unlike many other lorikeets, the Biak Lorikeet possesses a distinctly dark blackish-green abdomen and a broad, bright yellow collar.

Habitat

Primary and secondary lowland tropical forests, forest edges, and coconut groves.

Range

Endemic to the islands of Biak and Supiori in West Papua, Indonesia.
