Field notes

It is the only roller species strictly endemic to the Sulawesi subregion.
Unlike many rollers that prefer open scrub, this species is primarily a forest-dweller that perches high in the canopy.
The bird exhibits a 'sit-and-wait' hunting strategy, diving from tall vantage points to snatch insects, spiders, and small lizards.
Its plumage features a unique contrast of an olive-green crown and mantle against deep purple wings and a cerulean rump.
The species was named after Coenraad Jacob Temminck, a renowned Dutch zoologist and director of the Leiden Museum.

Habitat

Primary and tall secondary lowland forests, forest edges, and occasionally submontane woodlands.

Range

Endemic to Sulawesi and the adjacent islands of Banggai, Lembeh, and the Sula archipelago.
