A large, robust seabird characterized by its mottled brown and white plumage, distinctive pink bill, and namesake pink feet. It is a trans-equatorial migrant that breeds exclusively on three islands off the coast of Chile.

What it sounds like

Silent while at sea; at breeding colonies, it produces a series of nasal, rhythmic braying sounds, moans, and guttural croaks.

Breeds only on the Juan Fernández Archipelago (Robinson Crusoe and Santa Clara islands) and Mocha Island in Chile.
Listed as Vulnerable due to its extremely restricted breeding range and threats from invasive species like cats and rats.
Performs a massive annual migration, traveling from the Southern Hemisphere to the North Pacific as far as Alaska during the austral winter.
Nests in long, underground burrows situated on steep, forested or grassy slopes often over 600 meters above sea level.
Forages using a combination of surface-seizing and pursuit-diving to catch small fish, squid, and crustaceans.

Habitat

Highly pelagic, spending most of its life over the open ocean and continental shelf; returns to offshore islands for nesting.
