It is the only lorikeet species restricted exclusively to the island of Mindanao.
Features a unique dark purplish-maroon band extending from the lores through the eyes to the back of the head.

Its primary diet consists of nectar and pollen, which it harvests using a specialized brush-tipped tongue.
Unlike most lowland parrots, this species thrives at high elevations between 1,000 and 2,500 meters.
