It is strictly endemic to the Serengeti ecosystem and surrounding areas of northern and central Tanzania.
The species is easily identified by its bright red throat and bare skin around the eyes, contrasted with orange-red legs.
It typically forages in small family groups or pairs, primarily searching for seeds, bulbs, and insects on the ground.
The bird possesses sharp spurs on its legs, which are used by males during territorial disputes.
Though locally common, its range is restricted to approximately 45,000 square kilometers of the Tanzanian interior.
