Field notes

It is the only munia species strictly endemic to the island of Borneo and its surrounding satellite islands.
Unlike most other munias, it lacks any distinctive patterns, featuring near-uniform dark chocolate-brown to blackish plumage.
The species is highly social and frequently forms large, noisy flocks with other munia species in rice paddies.
It has a heavy, conical, silver-grey bill designed for cracking various grass seeds and cultivated grains.
Breeding can occur year-round, with birds constructing large, domed grass nests in bushes or low trees.

Habitat

Grasslands, agricultural areas, scrub, and forest edges.
