Field notes

It is the most widespread and common member of the genus Progne throughout the Neotropics.
Unlike the Purple Martin, adult males never develop fully dark underparts, consistently retaining a gray chest and white abdomen.
They are highly adaptable nesters, frequently utilizing man-made structures such as building eaves, bridges, and hollow pipes.
Southern populations are migratory, traveling north from Argentina and Uruguay to the Amazon basin during the austral winter.
These social aerial insectivores often gather in massive communal roosts, sometimes numbering in the thousands, within city parks or mangroves.

Habitat

Open and semi-open lowlands, including urban areas, agricultural clearings, and forest edges, usually near water.

Range

Mexico and Central America south to central Argentina, including Trinidad.
