Field notes

It possesses a remarkably massive, deep bill that is nearly as long as its head.
The species is restricted to Bougainville Island and the neighboring Shortland Islands.
Unlike the related White-billed Crow, this species features a completely black bill and dark brown irises.
It is primarily arboreal, rarely descending to the ground, and moves through the canopy in pairs or small family groups.
The plumage is entirely black but exhibits a subtle purple or blue gloss under direct sunlight.

Habitat

Subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests.
