Field notes

It is the only member of the genus Pyrrhula that is endemic to the Philippines.
Unlike its colorful Eurasian relatives, it lacks red or pink plumage, appearing primarily brown and grey-brown.
The species is split into two distinct subspecies inhabiting the islands of Luzon and Mindanao respectively.
It primarily feeds on seeds, buds, and small fruits found in the high canopy of mossy forests.
It is typically found at elevations above 1,250 meters, reaching up to the highest peaks of its range.

Subtropical or tropical moist montane forests and mossy forests.
