Field notes

It is strictly endemic to the island of Sri Lanka, primarily restricted to the remaining primary rainforests of the wet zone.
Unlike many other magpies, it possesses a distinct chestnut-brown head, breast, and primary feathers that contrast sharply with its azure plumage.
They are highly social and intelligent birds, typically found foraging in small, noisy family groups of three to seven individuals.
The species is an opportunistic omnivore, feeding on a wide range of prey including tree frogs, lizards, insects, and various jungle fruits.
It is currently classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to the continued fragmentation and loss of its specialized high-canopy habitat.

Habitat

Undisturbed primary tropical rainforests and dense evergreen gallery forests in the humid wet zone.

Range

Endemic to the southwestern hill country and central highlands of Sri Lanka.
