Juvenile birds lack the signature red markings, which develop gradually as they reach maturity.
They show a strong dietary preference for the seeds and fruits of the African oil palm.
There are three distinct subspecies, including the Black-winged Parrot and the Lesser Jardine's Parrot.
Isolated populations in East Africa inhabit montane forests at altitudes up to 3,250 meters.
Unlike many gregarious parrot species, they typically travel in small family groups rather than large flocks.
