Field notes

It is the only flamingo species found in Europe, as well as parts of Africa and Asia.
The vibrant pink coloration is derived from carotenoid pigments found in their diet of brine shrimp and blue-green algae.
They are highly social birds that nest in massive colonies, sometimes numbering in the hundreds of thousands.

Parent birds produce a nutrient-rich 'crop milk' to feed their chicks, a trait shared with pigeons and penguins.
