A slender, medium-sized parrot of Southeast Asian montane forests, distinguished by its slate-gray hood and exceptionally long, pale-tipped tail.

Field notes

It is a close relative of the Slaty-headed Parakeet but is generally found at lower altitudes and further east.
Adult males possess a small, distinct maroon patch on the wing coverts which is absent in females.
The species is highly social, frequently observed in small, noisy flocks foraging in the forest canopy.
Its diet is specialized toward seeds, fruits, flowers, and leaf buds found in broadleaf evergreen forests.
The population is currently declining and is listed as Near Threatened due to habitat loss and poaching for the cage-bird trade.

Habitat

Subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests, often preferring hilly terrain and oak-pine woodlands.

Range

Southeast Asia, including Northeast India, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Southwest China.
