Field notes

The species is named for the two distinct black streaks on its face that resemble 'ears'.
In the agricultural regions of Argentina, it can form massive flocks numbering in the millions, making it a major game bird.
It is a prolific breeder, capable of raising multiple broods per year and even nesting in colonial aggregations under ideal conditions.
The flight is fast and direct, characterized by whistling wing beats common to many Zenaida species.
While primarily a ground feeder, it has expanded its range significantly following the deforestation and expansion of grain farming in South America.
