The Dusky-headed Parakeet is a medium-sized, social green parrot characterized by its distinct grayish-brown head and prominent white orbital ring.

What it sounds like

Field notes

It frequently nests within active arboreal termite mounds, which provide a stable microclimate and protection from predators.
Unlike many related parakeets, this species is almost exclusively found in lowlands near water sources like rivers and swamps.
They are commonly seen at 'clay licks' (collpas) where they ingest mineral-rich soil to neutralize toxins in their diet.
The species was named after Hugh Algernon Weddell, a British botanist who explored the South American interior in the 1840s.
While primarily green, its primary feathers and the underside of its tail feature a striking blue-black coloration visible in flight.

Habitat

Riverine forests, swampy woodlands, and secondary growth near permanent water bodies.

Range

Western Amazon Basin, including parts of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil.
