A medium-sized, colorful parakeet endemic to the Eastern Andes of Colombia, characterized by its distinctive yellow wing patches and brownish-red breast.

Field notes

It is the only member of the Pyrrhura genus found exclusively on the eastern slope of the Colombian Eastern Andes.
The species is currently classified as Vulnerable due to restricted range and habitat loss from agriculture.
A prominent diagnostic feature is the bright yellow primary coverts, which are highly visible during flight.
They are social birds usually seen in noisy flocks of 6 to 15 individuals foraging in the canopy.
Their diet is specialized toward the fruits and seeds of high-altitude trees, particularly those in the Melastomataceae and Bromeliaceae families.

Habitat

High-altitude cloud forests, elfin forests, and sub-paramo shrublands between 1,700 and 3,400 meters.

Range

Endemic to Colombia, specifically the departments of Boyacá, Cundinamarca, and Casanare.
