Field notes

Features a distinctive broad, iridescent turquoise-blue 'eyebrow' that wraps around the back of its black facial mask.
Commonly inhabits the high canopy level, making it one of the more difficult Tangara species to spot from the ground.
Regularly participates in mixed-species foraging flocks, often associating with other tanagers and flowerpiercers.
Two distinct subspecies are recognized: T. c. lutleyi in the northern range and T. c. cyanotis in the southern range.
Its diet is primarily frugivorous, focusing on small melastome berries, but it also gleans arthropods from mossy branches.

Habitat

Humid montane forests and mossy forest edges, typically at elevations of 1,000 to 2,300 meters.

Range

Eastern slopes of the Andes from Venezuela and Colombia south through Ecuador and Peru to Bolivia.
