Field notes

It is the official national bird of the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar.
Unlike many other partridge species, it frequently perches on trees or tall shrubs when alarmed.
It is the only member of the Alectoris genus that is native to the African continent.
The species is highly adapted to arid environments, obtaining most of its moisture from succulent plants and insects.
While primarily native to North Africa, it was introduced to the Canary Islands and Sardinia by humans in antiquity.

Habitat

Dry, rocky hillsides, scrubland, and open coniferous forests from sea level up to 3,000 meters.

Range

Native to North Africa (Morocco to Libya) and Gibraltar; introduced populations in the Canary Islands, Sardinia, and Madeira.
