Field notes

It is a restricted-range endemic found exclusively on Sumba Island in the Lesser Sundas of Indonesia.
The male displays a brilliant metallic blue-purple throat and forehead that contrasts sharply with its namesake apricot breast.
Unlike the flamboyant males, females are much duller with olive-green upperparts and yellowish underparts without the bright orange patch.
It utilizes a long, decurved bill specifically adapted for extracting nectar from tubular flowers while also feeding on small insects.
The species is frequently observed in coconut groves and coastal mangroves as well as inland primary forests.

Habitat

Subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, mangroves, and rural gardens.
