Field notes

Unlike most parrot species that walk or waddle, White-bellied Parrots frequently hop with both feet to move across branches.
They engage in a behavior called 'leaf bathing,' where they rub their bodies against wet foliage to clean their feathers.
The species is divided into three distinct subspecies—leucogaster, xanthomerius, and xanthurus—based on thigh and tail coloration.
They are often characterized as 'clowns' due to their intense curiosity and complex social play, including wrestling with conspecifics.
Nests are typically located in high tree cavities, often positioned more than 30 meters above the forest floor.

Habitat

Lowland tropical rainforests and seasonally flooded varzea forests.

Range

The Amazon Basin south of the Amazon River, spanning parts of Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru.
