Field notes

It is the official animal symbol of the island of Tenerife.
The species is a specialist feeder, evolved to pry seeds from the cones of the endemic Canary Island pine (Pinus canariensis).
It was previously considered conspecific with the Gran Canaria Blue Chaffinch before being split based on genetic and morphological differences.
Unlike many passerines, it is strictly sedentary and remains in high-altitude pine forests year-round.
Its thick, powerful bill is significantly larger than that of the Common Chaffinch, allowing it to access food sources other finches cannot.

Habitat

Mature, high-altitude Canary Island pine forests, typically between 1,000 and 2,000 meters in elevation.
