Field notes

It is a sexually dimorphic species where the male is deep blue with a red breast, while the female is primarily brownish with subtle reddish-buff tones.
The species is restricted to the Chocó Endemic Bird Area, a region known for high levels of endemism but facing significant habitat loss.
Currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, its population is declining due to rapid deforestation for timber and palm oil plantations.
They are primarily canopy dwellers, often joining mixed-species foraging flocks to search for small fruits and arthropods.
Unlike the more common Blue Dacnis, this species has a much more restricted elevational range, usually staying below 600 meters.

Habitat

Humid lowland and foothill evergreen forests and mature secondary growth.
