Field notes

It is the only member of the rosella genus (Platycercus) native to northern Australia.
The species displays a 'scalloped' appearance due to black feathers edged with pale yellow on its back.
Unlike its southern relatives, it features prominent white-and-violet cheek patches against a solid black crown.
Nesting typically occurs in deep tree hollows lined with decayed wood dust, usually near water.
Dietary habits include foraging for seeds of eucalyptus, melaleuca, and various grasses on the ground or in the canopy.

Habitat

Tropical savannas, open woodlands, and riverine forests.
