The Green Rosella is the largest of the rosella species, a heavy-set parrot endemic to Tasmania known for its distinct yellow-green plumage and red forehead.

What it sounds like

A loud, metallic 'cussick-cussick' in flight and soft, musical piping notes when perched.

Field notes

It is the largest member of the genus Platycercus, measuring up to 37 centimeters in length.
The species is entirely endemic to Tasmania and the larger islands of the Bass Strait.
Unlike many other rosellas, the Green Rosella shows very little sexual dimorphism, with males and females appearing nearly identical.
Juveniles are significantly different in appearance, being almost entirely dull green until their first molt.
They are known to feed on the larvae of wood-boring moths, supplemented by a diet of seeds, fruits, and nectar.

Habitat

Eucalypt forests, temperate rainforests, woodlands, and suburban gardens.

Range

Tasmania, King Island, and the Furneaux Group, Australia.
