Field notes

Formerly considered conspecific with Naumann's Thrush (Turdus naumanni), with which it still occasionally hybridizes.
Breeds in the subarctic taiga and forest-tundra transition zones across northern Siberia.
Highly migratory, with wintering populations reaching as far south as Myanmar and Taiwan.
Exhibits a distinctive dark breast band and heavy spotting that distinguishes it from other Turdus species.
Known as a rare but recurring vagrant to Western Europe and the coastal regions of Alaska.

Habitat

Open woodland edges, riparian scrub, and larch forests during breeding; parks, orchards, and agricultural fields in winter.
