Field notes

It is the only bird species strictly endemic to metropolitan France.
It is a sedentary specialist, almost exclusively inhabiting old-growth Corsican Pine forests.
Unlike most other nuthatch species, it frequently excavates its own nesting cavities in soft, decayed pine wood.
The species relies heavily on Corsican Pine seeds, which it caches in bark crevices to survive the winter.
Sexual dimorphism is present: males display a sharp black crown, while the female's crown is blue-grey.

Habitat

High-altitude mature Corsican Pine (Pinus nigra ssp. laricio) forests between 800 and 1,800 meters.
