Field notes

It is the smallest species of true quail, with adults typically measuring only 12 to 14 centimeters in length.
Males display a distinctive slate-blue breast and deep chestnut belly, while females are cryptically patterned in mottled brown for camouflage.
The species is highly precocial, with chicks often capable of flight within just two weeks of hatching.
Commonly known in aviculture as the 'King Quail' or 'Chinese Painted Quail,' it has been bred into numerous color mutations.
Despite their small size, they are capable of explosive, short-distance flight to escape predators when flushed from cover.

Habitat

Dense, moist grasslands, swampy meadows, and shrubby verges.

Range

Widespread throughout South and Southeast Asia, reaching as far as northern and eastern Australia.
