A small, slender ground-dwelling pigeon characterized by its brownish-grey plumage and distinctive black-and-white barring. It is highly regarded for its rhythmic, melodic cooing and is common in both rural and urban environments.

What it sounds like

A rhythmic series of soft, staccato coos often transcribed as 'ook-a-look-ok' or 'drrr-drrr-drrr'.

Field notes

It is also known as the Barred Ground Dove due to the fine horizontal barring on the sides of its neck, breast, and belly.
In Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Indonesia, these birds are prized for their voices and are featured in high-stakes singing competitions.
The species is almost exclusively granivorous, foraging on the ground for small grass and weed seeds.
During courtship, the male performs an elaborate display involving rhythmic bowing and the spreading of his tail feathers.
While native to the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia, it has been successfully introduced to Hawaii, the Seychelles, and Mauritius.

Habitat

Open country, scrub, parklands, agricultural areas, and urban gardens.

Range

Native to Southeast Asia (Southern Myanmar to Indonesia); introduced widely across the Indo-Pacific and Hawaii.
