Field notes

This species is sexually monomorphic, meaning males and females have identical plumage and cannot be distinguished visually.
It belongs to the 'eye-ring' group of lovebirds, characterized by a conspicuous white fleshy ring of bare skin around each eye.
Unlike the Rosy-faced Lovebird, it carries nesting materials such as bark and grass exclusively in its beak rather than tucked into its rump feathers.
They are highly social and monogamous, forming long-term pair bonds that are maintained through frequent mutual preening.
While endemic to the interior plateaus of Tanzania, feral populations have established globally due to escapes from the cage-bird trade.

Habitat

Dry acacia savannas, lightly wooded grasslands, and scrublands, typically below 1,800 meters elevation.

Range

Native to northern and central Tanzania; introduced populations exist in Kenya, Burundi, and various urban centers worldwide.
