Field notes

It is the only member of the genus Lorius to possess a prominent white patch on the nape and upper mantle.
The species is geographically restricted to a single island: New Ireland in the Bismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea.
Unlike many of its lowland relatives, this lory is a montane specialist, predominantly found at elevations between 500 and 2,000 meters.
It features a specialized brush-tipped tongue designed for extracting nectar and pollen from tropical blossoms.
The bird's conservation status is Near Threatened due to its small, localized range and potential threats from habitat loss.
