Possesses the bright red under-tail coverts that are a diagnostic hallmark of the Pionus genus.
Found at high elevations, typically ranging between 2,000 and 3,500 meters in the Andes mountains.
Taxonomically complex, it is often grouped with or split from the White-capped Parrot (Pionus seniloides).
Highly social, they are frequently observed in noisy flocks of 20 or more individuals flying over the canopy.
When threatened or excited, they may emit a unique 'wheezing' sound caused by rapid breathing.

Habitat

Humid montane cloud forests and temperate elfin forests.
