Field notes

Displays a brilliant iridescent sapphire or indigo mantle that contrasts with a white facial stripe and throat.
It is primarily terrestrial, foraging for seeds, fallen fruits, and small invertebrates among leaf litter.
When disturbed, it typically runs or walks rapidly away rather than taking flight.
The species is often found in hilly terrain or around ravines within humid evergreen forests.
Its plumage provides excellent camouflage against the dappled light of the dark rainforest floor despite its vivid colors.

Habitat

Humid lowland and foothill evergreen forests, often preferring primary growth with dense understory.

Range

Western Amazon Basin and the eastern Andean foothills, including parts of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil.
