Field notes

It is native to the high-altitude cloud forests and montane scrub of the central Andes, reaching elevations up to 3,500 meters.
Successful feral populations are well-established in major U.S. urban areas, particularly in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Miami.
Distinguishable from the closely related Red-masked Parakeet by its lack of red on the leading edge of the wing.
The species is known to nest in high-altitude cliff crevices as well as traditional tree hollows.
Highly social and nomadic, they often form noisy flocks of over 100 individuals to forage for seeds, fruits, and nuts.

Habitat

Cloud forests, montane woodlands, and urban parks in introduced ranges.

Range

Native to Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina; introduced to California, Florida, and Hawaii.
