Field notes

It is a regional endemic restricted to the high mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama.
Unlike many wood-warblers, it often forages in the canopy while also investigating epiphytes and mossy branches.
It is a monotypic species, meaning there are no recognized subspecies within its limited geographic range.
The species is frequently observed as a core member of mixed-species foraging flocks in the Talamancan highlands.
Its taxonomic history is complex, having been previously classified in the genera Parula and Vermivora.

Habitat

Humid montane forests, oak woodlands, and elfin forest edges, typically above 1,500 meters.
